ACN reached out to 1,155 Tarai Flood Affected Households with essential Food and Non-food items

The heavy monsoon inflicted flood and landslide in 33 districts of Eastern and Central regions of Nepal displaced more than 13,000 households with 90 deaths, 41 injured and 29 people are missing. Almost 10,000 houses damaged and total 36,728 households have been affected.

ACN reached 192 flood-affected families in Jeetpur Simra Rural Municipality – 8, 10, 24 of Bara district with relief materials. These families are from the Dalit caste group and Muslim who are living in a very poor condition.

ACN reached 350 flood-affected families in Pakaha Mainpur Rural Municipality-4, and 153 flood-affected families in 16-Birgunj Metropolitan of Parsa district with relief materials. After the monsoon, many flood-affected places were dried up but Pakaha Mainpur – 4 of Parsa had water for many days due to improper water drainage system. When Rural Municipality chairmen requested the people to move to the nearer school for some days, they refused. In this situation, ACN discovered Pakaha Mainpur Rural Municipality-4 and provided with relief materials.

Simultaneously, ACN reached 460 flood-affected families in Rajdevi Rural Municipality 9 & Pahora Rural Municipality -1 of the most badly affected Rautahat district with relief materials.

Altogether, ACN reached out to 1,155  flood-affected households with essentials food items for 15 days and non-food items (soap, toothpaste, brush, sanitary pads, gas lighter, blankets, mosquito net, torchlight and tarpaulin) in three most affected Bara, Parsa and Rautahat districts of Province number 2. We would like to thank all the local government and communities for their cooperation during the distribution of relief materials.

ACN reached to a community in Rajdevi Municipality-9, Rautahat district where 85 households were using one tube well. In this situation, ACN installed 5 tube well.

Joy of being able to read and write

Bhagawati Bhurtel 58 years from kudahar-10, Pokhara expressed her joy with us after being able to sign, write and read her own name. She shared her joy with us.  

 

I was 10 years old when I lost my parents, after that, I had to take care of my family members. Though I had not opportunity to go to school, I managed to send my little brother to school and he completed his high school studies. I didn’t want to get married but my elder sister somehow convinced me to get married at my early age.

After marriage, I started to sell fruits and vegetables. I was happy that I was able to send my children to the school and they completed their high school studies. In fifteen years of selling fruits and vegetables, I felt many times if I had basic mathematics knowledge and an ability to sign, read and write my own name because I had experience of being cheated by customer many times while returning cash. In the past I was also in a situation where I couldn’t write, read nor record my own phone number.

Once my neighbor came to me and shared with me about the literacy class. She shared that it was for those people who had limitation to read and write. After listening to her I wanted to join the class, I stopped selling fruits and vegetables and joined the literacy class organized by Asal Chhimekee Nepal.

Now, I have completed four months of literacy class. I learned Nepali and English alphabet, and numbers.  Now, I can give my signature, read and write with some basic math knowledge. I can say my mobile number and note down others mobile number as well. Happiest thing in my life after adult literacy class is that I can teach Nepali and English alphabet and numbers (ABC & 123) to my grandchildren who are in the Montessori level.  It makes me so happy.

I am able to achieve the first position in the exam after completion of four month literacy class and we had a graduation program. My son shared my graduation picture on his Facebook and my many relatives and friends congratulates me which made me so happy and confident. 

I am very grateful to my teacher for helping me and guiding me in my pace to learn. I would like to thank Asal Chhimekee Nepal for providing this opportunity.

This year, 180 women participated in the literacy class of ACN.

A Joyful Day for Nawajeewan Didibahini (Sisters)

Every year the vibes of Teej, the greatest festival of women in Nepal, does not leave a single woman, irrespective of the geographical location, ethnicity or status. Shopping begins months before and women are dressed up in red sari, red tika and beautifully decorate themselves and come together to sing the festive songs and dance. They sing and dance the whole day, observe fast and enjoy the delicious foods. Normally, the songs are to express their happiness, plights, struggles, and sadness to advocate for their rights.

 

When nearby public places, roads and haat bazaar is resounded with Teej songs, it would be the time when didi-bahini (sisters) in Nawajeewan feel themselves to be unfortunate, confined and get agitated easily. But, this year, our Nawajeewan didi-bahini (sisters) also did not have to feel left out. They were very excited for Sunday (1 Sept 2019) as they planned to celebrate the day together.

 

On Sunday, all didi-bahini in Nawajeewan were so anxious for the daybreak when they had planned to stay back at the center itself and have fun the whole day. Many of their families had come to take them home for the festival but they insisted to remain in the center itself saying that it was like their own home and they were well cared and loved. All of them began their day by trying different sarees, then, singing and dancing with tasty foods. It was a joyful day for our Nawajeewan didi-bahini (sisters) and Nawajeewan.

Nawajeewan Treatment and Rehabilitation Center is one of the major programmes of Asal Chhimekee Nepal (ACN) with the objective of helping women to overcome their addiction and rehabilitation to their family and community. Currently, there are 12 women in Nawajeewan center.

Asal Chhimekee Nepal Reached Out to 342 Flood Affected Households (Approx. 2,800 People) in Bara and Parsa District with Essentials Food and Non-Food Items

Flood and landslide triggered by incessant rainfall since July 11 in Eastern and Central regions of Nepal displaced more than 13,000 households with 90 deaths, 41 injured and 29 people are missing. Almost 10,000 houses damaged and total 36,728 households have been affected. Out of 77 districts, 33 districts are affected by floods and landslides. Bara and Parsa are also one of the worst affected districts.

Asal Chhimekee Nepal (ACN) recently completed its relief support program for windstorm affected in Bara and Parsa. Again, both districts hit by heavy incessant rainfall with 5 death, 1 injured and 2,656 displaced temporarily. ACN’s team traveled to flood-hit areas to assess the situation on 17th July 2019 and had a meeting with the District Administrative Office for the approval of relief work for flood-affected of Bara and Parsa districts.  

 

ACN reached out to 217 flood affected households in Jeetpur Simara and 125 flood affected households in Birgunj with essentials food items and non-food items (soap, toothpaste, brush, sanitary pads, gas lighter, blankets, mosquito nets, and tarpaulin) in coordination with Jeetpur Simara Sub-metropolitan and Birgunj Metropolitan. These affected households are from so-called ‘Dalit’ untouchable caste and Muslim and living in a very poor conditions. We were the first to reach with relief supplies.

Urban Clinic and Two Rural Clinic Buildings Handed over in Gorkha

 On 16th April 2019, ACN handed over two rural clinics to the local government of Siranchowk rural municipality, Gorkha. Two-roomed newly constructed Simle Rural Clinic and Jarebar Rural Clinic has been jointly inaugurated by Ward Chair. Mr. Raju Gurung and ACN Chair. Mr. Bharat Bahadur Gurung in the presence of other government officials, ACN board members, and community people. This two rural clinics are set to serve 700 households of Siranchowk rural municpality, Gorkha District.

On 1st July 2019, a newly constructed six-roomed Ghalang urban clinic building was inaugurated by the chief guest, Minister of Physical infrastructure development of Gandaki province, honorable Ramsaran Basnet and was handed over to Gorkha rural municipality, Gorkha. This urban clinic is set to serve 600 household of Gorkha rural municipality.      

In addition earthquake resistant, gender and disable-friendly CGI roofed building, ACN also provided necessary furniture and medicine.

Provision of basic health services, especially preventive and promotive services has found very limited in Rural Nepal. Therefore to increase access in basic primary health service closer to the community, Primary Health Care Rural Clinic service was initiated and established in 1994. Rural Clinic is the extensive service sites of primary health care center (PHCCs), health post (HPs), and sub-health post (SHPs) up to community level. However, health posts are the first institution contact point for the basic primary health services in rural remote villages in Nepal. The aim of the urban and rural clinic is to improve access to some basic health services including family planning, safe motherhood, general treatment, child health, first-aid and health education, and counseling. Based on the local needs Rural Clinics are conducted every month at a fixed location on specific dates and time. So once in a month, rural local health personnel conduct these clinics with FCHVs and provide basic primary health service, health education, and counseling.

These three clinics operated its service form different places (i.e. under the tree, individual house, and community shed) as they had no building for clinics. Nepal earthquake of 2015 caused extensive damage to many public buildings and still, health posts of rural villages are struggling to resume their full health service. In this context, to bring primary basic health services including family planning, safe motherhood and child health closer to rural households, ACN constructed an urban clinic and two rural clinics building and handed over in Gorkha district.
