Urban Clinic and Two Rural Clinic Buildings Handed over in Gorkha

 On 16th April 2019, ACN handed over two rural clinics to the local government of Siranchowk rural municipality, Gorkha. Two-roomed newly constructed Simle Rural Clinic and Jarebar Rural Clinic has been jointly inaugurated by Ward Chair. Mr. Raju Gurung and ACN Chair. Mr. Bharat Bahadur Gurung in the presence of other government officials, ACN board members, and community people. This two rural clinics are set to serve 700 households of Siranchowk rural municpality, Gorkha District.

On 1st July 2019, a newly constructed six-roomed Ghalang urban clinic building was inaugurated by the chief guest, Minister of Physical infrastructure development of Gandaki province, honorable Ramsaran Basnet and was handed over to Gorkha rural municipality, Gorkha. This urban clinic is set to serve 600 household of Gorkha rural municipality.      

In addition earthquake resistant, gender and disable-friendly CGI roofed building, ACN also provided necessary furniture and medicine.

Provision of basic health services, especially preventive and promotive services has found very limited in Rural Nepal. Therefore to increase access in basic primary health service closer to the community, Primary Health Care Rural Clinic service was initiated and established in 1994. Rural Clinic is the extensive service sites of primary health care center (PHCCs), health post (HPs), and sub-health post (SHPs) up to community level. However, health posts are the first institution contact point for the basic primary health services in rural remote villages in Nepal. The aim of the urban and rural clinic is to improve access to some basic health services including family planning, safe motherhood, general treatment, child health, first-aid and health education, and counseling. Based on the local needs Rural Clinics are conducted every month at a fixed location on specific dates and time. So once in a month, rural local health personnel conduct these clinics with FCHVs and provide basic primary health service, health education, and counseling.

These three clinics operated its service form different places (i.e. under the tree, individual house, and community shed) as they had no building for clinics. Nepal earthquake of 2015 caused extensive damage to many public buildings and still, health posts of rural villages are struggling to resume their full health service. In this context, to bring primary basic health services including family planning, safe motherhood and child health closer to rural households, ACN constructed an urban clinic and two rural clinics building and handed over in Gorkha district.

Baby kits with nutrition supplement and school uniform distribution program to windstorm affected

On 31st March 2019, Bara and Parsa the southern districts of central Nepal suffered from heavy rainstorm and wind. People lost their family members, houses, and are left with very little. ACN was able to reach to storm affected families with immediate supplies and support in coordination with Bara Christian Community, local community, local & central government.

 

After distribution of immediate relief supplies to windstorm affected families, pregnant and lactating mothers were identified to provide baby kits with nutrition supplements. 220 pregnant and lactating mothers received baby kits with nutrition supplements packs. In addition, 430 windstorm affected student received school uniform in Suwarna Rural Municipality, Bara district.

Sarita’s journey from street life to a better life

Sarita Lama, 32 years old from Kavre. She has one son and daughter. She was a drug and alcohol user. Her life was full of tragedy and struggle. But she continue to struggle and fight for herself and for kids. Finally, succeed to overcome her addiction. She would like to share her life story.

My mother left me when I was 1 year old and my father and grandmother passed away. I left alone. Due to community pressure, my uncle agree to let me stay with his house. But I had to work for them, I used to bring grass and wood from the jungle. While I was growing up, slowly my uncle started to treat me well. I was happy as I thought that my uncle loved me but soon I realized that my uncle trying to sexually abuse me. Then I left uncle house. I was 12 when I started to live in the street with my friends. I used to collect garbage on the street for food. Slowly I learned to use dendrite glue and smoking. At the age of 14, I was involved in prostitution, from that time I learned to use drug. As days were passing.   

I married a man whom I used to live in street.  I gave birth to two kids, one son and daughter while living on street. I got more into addiction. Even I try to kill myself and my son. After birth of my daughter I tried to stop using drug but I could not. I did not get any support from husband and later he died because of HIV. I got scared that I might have HIV infected and got tested and I was not. That was so relieving. 

 

When I was living at the street many organization came to help me but I always ignore them. It was then when I lost my husband, again few women came to visit me and encouraged me to get admitted at Rehab center. I was admitted by them in the Rehab center at Kathmandu and kept my children in children home. After few months I was discharged form Rehab center, I relapsed again in addiction and then attained 2 different Rehab centers. After getting discharged from Karuna Nepal, women empowerment organization provide me employment opportunity. Then I started to work and I was far away from addiction. I got a job in a company and I was doing well. Again I found someone to marry me and I marry him with a hope to have a better life. I never knew that struggle of my life would not end there, my husband started drinking alcohol and physically abusing me.  After that, I could not control myself and started drinking alcohol and neglecting the job that I had. 

 I was so deep in drinking that the organization I was working at sent me to ACN’s  Nawajeewan Treatment and Rehabilitation center for treatment on alcoholism. I was admitted on 19th January 2018 and got discharged in July 2018 after overcoming my addiction.

Before Nawajeewan Rehabilitation center, I had stayed 7 times in different Rehab centers but Nawajeewan was different. In Nawajeewan, I found a very lovely and caring environment, people are very kind and helpful to me. I felt like I found a family. I used to get lots of punishment in other rehab centers and torture which I could not express. But in Nawajeewan, I able to express myself, learned to love, respect and control my anger. I learned to read and write and household skills. I also understand the value of work.

 Today I am confident and never going to look back again. It’s been 15th months since I left alcohol. I am working and study in grade 4. I neglected my children in the past but not any more. I am going to take care of them properly. I want to give them a nice environment to grow. I want to be a role model for my children.

World Day Against Child Labor-12 June 2019

World Day Against Child Labor

 

Celebration of World Day Against Child Labor with a theme “Children Shouldn’t work in the fields, but on Dreams!”

On this occasion, Asal Chhimekee Nepal organized a door to door event mobilizing Child Clubs. We visited three different communities (wards) in Pokhara with the commitment forms that ‘My House and workplace is free from (of HUNCHHA KI?) Child Labor’. In the program, we reached individual houses, shared on child labor and took commitment from them that their houses and workplaces are free from Child Labor. The program went well. This is our small contribution to raising awareness on this issue.

Trauma Healing Program for Storm Affected of Bara Parsa

On 31st March 2019, Bara and Parsa the southern districts of central Nepal suffered from massive rainstorm and winds. After the completion of initial relief program of distribution of basic utensils and cooking stove with gas cylinder, ACN initiates a project called Bara Parsa Windstorm Recovery Support Project to carry out the further recovery support activities to Bara Parsa windstorm affected families and communities.

It was found children and parents are still in under fear (trauma) after the windstorm incident. So it is planned to organize Trauma Healing Training to Teachers and Trauma Healing Orientation Program to Parents.

The main objective of the program is to deliver knowledge to teacher and parents on overcoming the trauma of the disaster which they will use to help their children to get over from the traumatic situation and apply safety method to protect themselves and others during the disaster period.

Trauma Healing Training for Teachers

Two days Trauma Healing Training was conducted among teachers of Suwarna Rural Municipality at Shree Rastriya Ma.Vi. Hardiya, 8 – Bara. 25 teachers participated in the training. Among them, 12 participants from Government school, 9 from private school and 4 from child -friendly space. Teaching materials (puppets, story books, crayons) also provided to teachers after the end of the training. Participants shared that training was helpful to them as they are also feeling better and learned how to help children those are under trauma to get over. In addition, they also learn how to be safe and help others to be safe from disasters.

Trauma Healing Orientation Program for Parents

Trauma healing orientation program conducted among parents in Suwarna Rural Municipality, Bara district. 318 parents of four communities participated in the orientation program. After the session, they shared that they are feeling better by sharing the horrible experience of the windstorm. In addition, they also learned methods to take care of their children to get over from the trauma of disasters. From the program, they also learned to be safe and help others to be safe from disaster.

The program was facilitated by the Early Child Education Center (ECEC), Lalitpur. The program was conducted with the local support of Protection Nepal ((a local NGOs) and in coordination with Suwarna Rural Municipality, Bara district.
